Fair shop rates ?

Was checking out a local diesel shop that mainly does cummins 12 valves, for parts & labor prices for future possible needs, told em what I was going to do to start.....................

KDP fix
100 fuel plate
4k gov springs
60lb valve springs
timing advance

they said they would be happy to help with any/all of it, but would do all above parts & labor for around 1K, I doubt I'll have them do more than the timing advance but does this sound about norm for prices ???

Local Cummins shop wanted $495 to put valve springs in! No way I'm doing that, I'll just buy the special tools and do it myself.

That's probably not to bad for parts and labor but the only special tools needed are for the timing. The valve spring compressor is about $30-$40 but the timing tools are around $200 off eBay. The local shop near me charges $200 to set the timing.....it's up to you on how valuable YOUR time is and how dirty you want to get.
