People with DP-Tuner/OBS Truck...help

hey guys,

I have a 5pos F5 chip from Jody. I've been having issues with since day one....stock, 60hp, 80hp, 140hp, smoke.
The first chip I got wouldn't let the truck start so they sent me a second one, no questions asked...
I've been having a problem though since I put it in
In the lower positions, down low at WOT it feels like it is leaning out. pops a little bit then starts goin good...the 140hp and "smoke" positions are no good, as soon as I switch in the idle goes up about 100rpm and it sounds like it fattens up(which I would think is good), any thing above idle at anything more than 1/16 throttle it leans way out pops, chugs and barely moves (oh and blows NO SMOKE what-so-ever)

Since then, acting on advice I got, I've replace the Cam sensor, upgraded to a SuperDuty HPOP & ICP, and found a Ford TSB for injector orings...both the Hpop and the injector orings made a huge difference in the way the truck runs...(IP now hits 3500psi), it has a new fuel pump. pressure is 65psi(shimmed reg...)

I talked with Jody and gave him some ICP reading and he said he had to reflash the chip...I got it back and now 140hp is slow, it feels no different than 60hp. Smoke makes less smoke than 140hp did before the re-flash, its barely visible.
I had put my old Banks chip in when I removed the F5 to send back and honestly it was twice as fast as the 140hp used to be, and the motor runs much smoother too..... I hit higher boost with the Banks chip too-- 28psi(quickly) and only 23psi(slower) with the F5

Im not trying to bad mouth DP in anyway Jody has been more than helpful the whole time...Im just at a loss as what to do... I see posts on how fast he 140hp is and even some on how awsome the smoke postion is..?

Sorry this was so long, please help
~Tim

With stock injectors on an OBS you are only going to gain so much power. It is possible that the higher settings of the chip will not have any more power than the 60 hp setting. Same thing with the smoke setting, you probably will not be able to produce much smoke with stock OBS injectors. I cant personally verify the smoke part because I went from a Superchips tuner to a chip and Stage 1 injectors.

Does the DP chip perform better now than the Banks chip does?

I sure wish I had a SD pump if you can get that kind of ICP out of it. The best I have seen is 2700 with my stock pump. And a CEL when I get on it hard.

the Banks chip out performs the DP chip, at least by feel and watching the speedo and boost......no dyno or anything...

i know it will make more smoke than it does now because it made more in 140hp before the reflash than it does in smoke now......it just used to make popcorn in the 140(hard throttle) and smoke(all the time)

You should call DP and tell them what you have found out. I would think that the new chip would make more power than your Banks did but I cant say for sure.

It is possible that the smoke that you had before was from something in the programing being way off and with the correct settings you are able to burn the fuel more effectively.

eric going with your first reply...i looked into it a little with some other people and it seems the consensus is about 80hp max gain with stock injectors...

it seems logical...and seems to explain my issues....but i would think that all the chip companies would state that you wouldnt see anymore gain above a certain level with stock injectors...

guess i'll wait for my tax return and buy some injectors

I was thinking about these from Diesel Performance Plus
Stage 2-A - $900.00
180cc Power Stroke injectors fully rebuilt to restore proper specifications with
Brand New LARGER 7 hole Power Stroke nozzles. These injectors are capable of anadditional 190hp+ with the proper supporting mods

i think they are the same company that offers the DIY injecctors...I cant really be down for more than a morning...its my only vehicle... and the price seems great!!

I could be wrong, but your 1997 model might have split shots. But not all of them do. If that is the case, then you should have AB code injectors that are rated around 120-130cc's which is a little less than the SD trucks with AD's that flow around 140cc's. That is a lot more than the AA's that flow around 90'ish cc's My friends 97 that runs tunes from John Wood via a DP supplied F5 dyno'd at 306HP.
Also if you do have splits, they DIY kit you should run in the truck is the 2C that will convert your splits to singles that flow 180. That is the kit I plan on doing if I decide to build my own. And I have a 96 Cali truck with AB's.

mine are single shot AA's

pretty sure split shots were only Cali trucks
