EGT's / DP tuners

What is the max EGT's a 1997 Powerstroke diesel can run safely? My pyrometer is 4" after the turbo in the downpipe. Should the pyro be moved before the turbo?? I am installing a DP tuner with 40, 60 and 80 tow, 80 econo and 100 performance. Anything to watch for?? The exhaust is 4" from the downpipe back, K/N intake, pyro, tranny and boost guages. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You need to move your pyrometer pre-turbo.

Post-turbo will not give a reliable reading, temps can easily vary over 500 degrees pre/post depending on tune and load.

1300 is as high as you want to go for any length of time, you can go higher for brief WOT passes. Sled pullers see 1500+ frequently, but not for long periods.

How much boost are you seeing now? I'd keep a stock turbo under 28PSI if you want it to last, under 25PSI is more useful for EGTs.

I see a turbo boost of 18 psi MAX with no tuner and my stock exhaust other than a 3" downpipe. I am replacing my exhaust to 4" straight pipe from the downpipe back tommorow. I dont know whether the opened up exhaust will change the boost? my EGT's stock after the turbo will go to 550-600 max going up hill no load with the exhaust the way it is.

is it true that the Overboost Annihilator limits fuel to the motor if the boost gets to high?? if so what is the pressure that the boost has to get to before it limits fuel??

The PCM limits boost by defueling, boost "foolers" either bleed off boost at the MAP sensor or regulate it to a set point below the defuel threshold so you get max fuel at WOT. That's why you have to watch your gauges, without the PCM limiting boost the turbo could be damaged.

It's unlikely with stock injectors, you'll flow enough fuel to hurt anything.

I've never heard of the specific brand "overboost annihilator" but they all work pretty much the same.

From what i've read, OBS trucks don't need an Overboost Annihilator. They don't have a sensor for boost.

What the PCM does not do in the OBS truck is defuel at 25 like the SD's do. So there is no need for a boost fooler. I see over 30 on mine and it pulls the entire way.
