need some quick decision help on new truck

Ok guys, here's the deal. I have to sell my tuned out 2003 6.0L for a work truck with a flat bed. I LOVE my 6.0's power and NOISE. I will be towing primarily with the truck but still want to tune it for more power + MPG and have it ALL JAZZED OUT of trips to beach or hunting camp. I have located 2 possible candidates a 4x4 2005 f-350 crew cab with a 6.0 60k miles 23$k price (4.10 gears) and 2003 f-450 4x4 crew cab with 70k mile (4.30 gears) for <$20K: both autos

I need to have reliability #1
Mileage #2
Fun#3

so 7.3 or 6.0? 350 vs 450? I have no experience with the 6.0 but love the current one I own with a straight pipe AFE intake and diablosport tuner. I can swap my gaquges into either new truck. I guess the 4.30s would be same as if I got a 350 with tow boss. will be hauling HEAVY even for 450

I'd love your comments, and suggestions for the 7.3 tuning if I go that route.

Thanks,
Brett

i know mpg sucks on the f-450. my uncle bought a 2003 brand new and not only does he get less than 12mpg. he had to get Agricultural insurance here no one would insure it as personal. and i think he said the truck is pinned out at like 80. cuz of gears. but its a beast. go f-350 and do some air springs to help. IMHO

Thanks for the input. With all of the 7.3 guys talking about high teens and low 20s I was thinking maybe the 450 would get 15-17 on the highway unloaded.

Brett,

The 7.3 will get you reasonable mileage but you're not going to get anywhere fast due to the gears.

In my truck running empty 70-75 I get 17.4 thats due entirely the rpm required to turn it that fast. the 4.30's are only going to lower that number.

Tuning of the 7.3 is going to run a bit more than on the 6.0. You'll want downpipe, exhaust, intake, chip(not tuner) and more than likely mild injectors.

If you're towing heavy frequently then your mileage should come out roughly even between the two.

Ok I think I decided to buy the 7.3 F450. I can get it for less $$$, get a more reliable motor than the 6.0 and have money left over to tune it a bit + have a heavy duty truck.

So I will get a DP chip, which one though and what tunes though I'm not sure. i need 1 for best mileage, stock, one for best towing, and one for the most fun.

I will do a turbo back system; 4" for the 7.3?
(taking recomendations, liked my MBRP on my 6.0) may do stacks out the flat bed if I can find a manufactured set and don't have to customize.

will get a AFE proguard 7 cold air intake.

Get 2 under bed aluminum tool boxes (do we have any sponsors that sell these?)

I think I wil wait on injection untill I need to mess with them

Any 77K mile repair typical 7.3 repairs/problems to note?

For the DP, I would go with Stock, 80 Economy, either the 40, 60 or 80 tow (they depend on how much weight you tow...the more weight, the lower you want the setting at to keep your EGT's in check), and the 140 aggressive for your fun.

*Be sure to get some gauges*

4" Downpipe would work well with the proguard 7.

As for maintenance and/or repairs, o-rings. HPOP o-rings, turbo pedestal o-rings, and fuel bowl drain o-rings are the most common. They're cheap, just takes time to replace.
