Allison Swap

What needs to be done to make it happen. Swapping the 47re for an automatic allison. Which allison transmission would work if its possible and how to make sure it will work efficiently when its all complete. Thanks.

unfortunately the one guy on here that I know of that actually knows about putting an Allison 5-speed behind a 24v is over in Afghanistan for a year, I do know that he was having a lot of problems trying to get it to work properly, and was actually considering swaping to a 48re

Ford and some others used Cummins 5.9's and Allisons in their meduim duty trucks. Cummins 5.9's were also mated to the Allison trans in school bus's. It should be easy to contact Allison and work this out.

Awesome. An Allison dealer in Seattle said that an Allison 1000 or 2000 will work. All the adaptation can be found on the larger trucks that use the 5.9 Cummins engine. And the controller to make it work can be found in the aftermarket dealers. Transmission runs around $2,500-3,600 with a core of $1500-2000.

There are plenty of aftermarket parts for 1000, 2000, and 2400. The Allison does something you may not like it will be slower shifing but it sure nice to have a 5 or even a 6 speed.

Talked to a dealer with upgraded 47RE and 48RE transmissions. They said that even just the 47RE transmission not beat up or upgraded can last a long time, even just upgrading the 47RE would be better than purchasing a 48RE and upgrading everything in that saving a bit of money. They told me that after I said I wanted to pull the max gross which is little over 10k, said the 47RE alone or even upgraded is fine as long as your trying to race it then you start breaking parts.

48's have an extra clutch here and there, and upgraded shafts and planetaries. Also the valve body is capable of achieving a little more line pressure than a 47. However, all of the parts in the 47 can be upgraded with 48 parts. They are very very similar. Also a built 47 will hold all that it sounds like you are going to be asking of it. My 47re holds nearly 600hp at the tires, tows up to 10k and has withstood 40psi boosted 4wd launches. If all you are using it for is towing, and aren't racing it, driving it aggressively, or pushing excessive power. You will be fine with upgraded clutches, front band, converter, and valvebody. Also a few other small goodies, that should be part of any complete upgrade rebuild kit, i.e. accumulator, strut, anchor and apply lever. No need for a billet flex plate or input shaft. If you do decide to run a billet flex plate, you will need a billet input shaft to withstand the added stress from the resistance to flexing in the billet plate.

It will end up being a lot cheaper and easier to just stick with building the stock trans.

Sean- Awesome thats the conclusion I've come to after thinking about all the dealer said to me, so the 47 is staying. Thanks for the info and input.
