my new $600 idi work horse. injection pump turn-up and timing question

Hey guys. I'm new to the site, and the idi 6.9s so i got a few questions. Let me descibe the truck. I found a 86 f250 4x4 6.9 delivering pizzas to a house stuck back in the woods. It was sitting in the weeds with a for sale sign, busted brake line and two dead batterys. I waved 600 bucks in the guys face, and he took it and ran! Now I am the proud owner of a 164k mile super doodie ( as my boss calls it) . He thinks he's hot stuff in his powerchoke lol. I was wondering if there was anything I should look for as signs of neglect, things that should be replaced after xxxxxx amount of miles, ext. Things you would replace if you bought it from an air head he didn't even Kno diesel motors need the block heater to be PLUGED IN UNDER 40*!!

Also, when I drove it home, it seemed to have decent power and run smooth. I was wondering if I turn up the injection pump 2-4 flats, will that give me a good power bump, and is it wise to advance the timing for more gains? Or will it cause more problems than its worth? I am a mechanic, just not familiar with diesel. All help appreciated!!!

Also, if I wanted to do a home made turbo setup, I would probably go with remote mounted setup, and I'm wondering where I could find a turbo mount that will splice into the exhaust after the y pipe? I'm thinkin of mounting it in that space between the cab and rear tire, and doing remote oil feed and water to air intercooler, with an oil cooler and intercooler radiator in the other cavity on the opposite side of the truck, with some type of air scoop to keep egts and oil temps down. Any ideas?
