F350 trouble

So I've recently purchased a 89 f350 with the 7.3 idi in it.
Surprisingly it starts runs and moves and then dies after maybe a short 2min. It also seems like it's knocking louder than a diesel should under normal conditions.
The previous owner side it threw a rod but couldn't see any obvious damage to the block or any other part.
As I poked around in the engine bay I seen that the entire passenger side cylinder bank was blowing fuel out everywhere. It also had an incredibly dirty air filter and bone dry dipstick i.e. no oil, aside from that I couldn't see anything that would make it run as bad as it is.
Is there anyway to tell if there is a thrown rod without tearing down the motor or could these problems be the cause of the sad performance

do a compression check, clean the engine to find the source of the fuel leaks. check for water in the fuel filter at the drain. disconnect the fuel line from the inlet side of the filter, crank the engine to see in the lift pump is delivering. by removing the glow plugs you can tell if a rod is broken (no air pulse from a broken rod). fuel can also be getting out of the return fuel system if the o rings are bad or not installed on the individual injectors. this would also make the engine run rough and die. the fact that fuel is not being contained in the fuel plumbing could indicate that the engine is not getting the pressure it needs to sustain operation.
