help truck drives like ****

My truck seems to dart when you hit a bump or when you are moveing left of right but staying in the same lane. What I tring to say is that if I want to move the truck 12 inches to the right and stay in my same lane, if I turn the wheels that way the truck slow starts to go that way and then takes off and you have to jerk it back. It didn't drive like this 10 years ago...it also didn't drive like that last year.

So far I have replace the sway bar links and bushings, shocks, ball joints, drag link, gear box and power steerng pump. Every thing seem to help a little but nothing fixes it. The axle joints were ok as were the tie rod ends. The truck has also been alligned twice and has new tires on it.

right now the allignment is

front

camber .2 .3

caster 3.1 2.8

Toe .03 .01

total toe .04

steer ahead .01

rear

camber -.03 .0

toe .17 -.28

total toe -.11

thrust angle .22

Does anyone have any idea what to try? The second allignment shop thought the gear box needed adjusted. It was a rebuilt read head box, but they didn't mess with it.

thanks

Too much freeplay in the steering gearbox could cause your issue, but also if something in the rear suspension is loose could cause your symptom. Check all the axle u-bolts and leaf spring mounts. Is your truck 4wd or 2wd? If its 4wd, did you replace both upper and lower ball joints? I know on my truck, it would wander with worn front ball joints. Your rear thrust angle is 22 minutes, which is only about 1/3 of a degree, ideally 0 thrust is best, but all in all your alignment specs are not too bad.

My truck does the same. The cause of mine is leaf spring bushings are shot. I replaced my sway bar bushings with new poly ones, but haven't tackled the leaf springs.

The front or rear leaf spring bushings? Have you changed them yet did it help?

The unit bearing are fairly new. Some time I have noticed that the hubs don't unlock as quick as they should. Could that cause the problem.

I'd be re-checking/replacing Idler arm, steering tie rod ends, and as stated, the leaf spring bushings, also check the track bar bushing. I've always found a sudden change in steering to come from a worn component somewhere in the system. There's not much else it can be.

The Current Truck (Oct-2013 to Present):
1999 (Early) F-350 Lariat, CCLB, SRW, Black/Tan

7.3L Powerstroke, 4R100, 4x4, 3.73, 37x13.50-18s, '05 Axle Swap, 6" Fabtech lift, GTP38 "D66" turbo upgrade, SCT 4-position chip with custom tuning by me, Straight Piped 4" down pipe through 5" dual stacks, N-Fab full length triple steps, Pro-Tech cab guard and tool box, louvered 5th wheel gate, Hella 500 Fog and Driving lamps, much more to come...
The one I'll miss, (Mar-2009 to Jan-2014):
2000 Excursion XLT 4x4

6.8L V-10, 4R100, 4.30, 285/75-18, 271whp / 388wtq
The one I won't, (Jul-2005 to Sep-2012):
2005 F-350 XLT, CCLB, SRW, 4x4 FX4

6.0L PSD, ZF-6S650, 3.73, 35x12.5-18, 4.5" Lift
