Anyone having issues with the factory ford brake controllers?

Hello everyone. Lately I have had a problem with my trailer pigtail connector. When you have a trailer hooked in it and you are going down the road it keeps saying the trailer is disconnected and then it flashes and goes back to normal operation. I thought it was my trailers so I borrowed a friend's trailer and went to Nebraska. When I got to my destination I unhooked the electric brake wire on the trailer recepticle and plugged it back in. It never made a peep the whole way back. When I got home I switched trailers and tried it and it was fine with the wire off of this trailer as well. I took it to Ford and they told me to check my connections on my trailer because there is no problem with my wiring on my truck. So I did and yesterday I hooked on to my gooseneck to haul a truck and now it is worse and it started saying trailer fault, and that won't go away until you either unhook the trailer or shut the truck off. I am going to recheck the brakes on the trailer to eliminate that possibility, but they work fine with everyone else's trucks. If anyone else has some input I would appreciate it. Thanks Ryan.

The trailer may work just fine with a old style brake controller but still have an issue with the factory TBC. The factory unit sends a small voltage signal throught the brake and brake light circuits to check for a tariler connection. It has to see that signal come back or it sets a fault. Now any small wiring issue will set it of (and you know how well most trailers are wired) a corroded or loose connection. Even a loose bulb will cause a fault. From what I have seen 98% of the time there is a issue with the trailer not the truck.

Check your trailer over really well and get rid of all the "scotch lock" connections

Thanks for the help. I will check the trailer out again and there aren't any of those water retaining scotch loks on it. But there probabaly is a messed up wire some where.

Yeah, I used to pull a trailer with my '05 sometimes and it always said "Trailer Fault" every time you hit the brakes with that trailer hooked to it. I guess it was smart enough to tell that the trailer was a POS....

I use to have the same problem with the gooseneck trailer Squatch pulled to Iowa, I cleaned the plug and put some di-electric grease on the connections (trailer side) and never had a problem, unless Corey did on his way to Iowa (other than the expired tags )

I wonder if the actuators in the brakes on the trailer could be bad. I have noticed that it only has done it on this particular trailer lately. I have already cleaned the trailer plug and put dielectric grease in it but that doesn't mean it is ok. I know that darn dinging will drive you nuts on a road trip.:splat
