Sloppy gear lever

My shifter is real sloppy, when I put it in overdrive it usually settles around 3rd (without actually going in 3rd)

Can this be fixed from the transmission side or is the problem in the steering column?

I had the same problem on my 04. Check the shifter cable where it hooks up to the tranny mine was hanging on by 3 pieces then it snapped. I replaced it and the lever is very tight now.

9" lift w/ 38"x15.5" Toyo MT's on 20" XD Diesel rims, 5" MBRP turbo back no cat, new head gaskets w/ ARP studs, Banks 6 gun w/ pda. a-pillar guages, Harley grill and lower valance. hopefully more to come

There are also bushings in the steering column, relatively easy to change from the top side with the cover off inside the cab. These are plastic and can wear out easily. It is possible that the selector arm is loose on the front facing end of the interior shift tube under the dash, I have fixed a few of those situations as well.
