Driving: My V-10 Excursion vs. My 6.0L F-350

So I had to drive the wife's Excursion instead of my F-350 tonight. It's about a 110 mile drive, and I go from 2700ft elevation over a 5500ft pass back down to 2500ft along the way. My F-350 6.0L does the drive pretty effortlessly, and pulls the entire grade in OD (6th) at 70mph. The V-10 in the Excursion is no slouch, especially with the 4.30s. But the stupid thing hasn't got enough torque to cross the pass without shifting in and out of overdrive repeatedly until it finally held 3rd at 3000rpm to do 62mph.

Power aside, there is also a huge handling disparity between the '00 Excursion and the '05 F-350 CC SRW. Both are 4wd. The '05 is solid and has little to no body lean issues cornering at or slightly over the posted speed. The Excursion on the otherhand is a handfull and then some. It has a ton of body roll, and just wallows into and through the turns, and forget speed. It's like driving a sloppy jalopy.

So not only does the Excursion need to lose a couple cylinders and change fuel types, but it also needs some serious stability and ride control improvements. I've got my work cut out for me...

I've heard that about excursions from other members as well, at least the handling part, especially when towing. If I remember correctly, stiffer leaf springs were the cure, especially in the rear. A bigger anti sway bar helped but was not as effective as springs. Harry

Excursions are built with a softer ride or springs manily, therefore creating a looser feeling of stability. there are upgrades for this or parts can be sourced from trucks. but you may start complaining of a harsh ride after.

I left my rear leafs in place and added an OEM rear swaybar from an F250, also replaced worn ball joints and now it handles good with or without a load.

AND YOU THOUGHT CARTER SUCKED

The Excursion has extremely soft springs, but the biggest front sway bar. Ford tried to make it more compliant for soccer moms.

Keep the front sway bar, get a rear one, and replace all the springs. Shocks help too.

Well, shocks for sure. It has a rear sway bar, but it's dinky. I'm kind of thinking part of it may be the tires. It has 265/75-16 load D BFGs and they have a ton of sidewall. I have a spare set of 20s that I didn't care for on my truck, but may go a long way to fixing the Excursion.

So I hd to pass by home on my way th LA Wed. afternoon, so my wife met me and we traded trucks. We both said "yeah, I get my truck back". Getting back on the road, it was instantly obvious, the truck is more stable, handles speed better, and I didn't have to listen to that funky V-10 sound any more!

That's correct. Forgot about the D tires. They were also on them to make more mush.

Well, I'm reallly leaning towards throwing my spare set of 20s on it just to see the result. I'm looking into rear bars to see if maybe a larger bar off of a truck would be a good inexpensive upgrade. Then I have to decide on the shocks...
