Even if the bellhousings bolt up okay, wouldn't the torque converters have different stall speeds?

The cases actually are a tiny bit different. The ones behind the gassers do not have that little inpection cover under the TC.

lots of differences between the two. but the pieces are interchangeable if need be. the thing is the e4od saw many many upgrades through the years, the diesel tranny always had the best or strongest pieces in them for the specific time.

There never was an E4OD behind a 5.4L. The 5.4L only had the 4R100 and TorqShift behind it.

The 5.4L and 7.3L bolt patterns are different. The transmissions won't interchange.

Take it from the expert!

I'm gonna hi-jack for a post or two with a question of my own... Torqshift taking forever to actually engage into gear after moving shifter, sometimes up to 8 seconds and clunks hard into gear when it does go... Is that a sign of the trans gettin ready to go?

the 5.4l was introduced in 97 and it did have the e4od until late 98 it was the e4od and then the 4r100 in late 98 and exclusively 99 and beyond, ( basically the same trans). they renamed the e4od the 4r100. the 4r100 has a few upgrades over the last generation of the e4od. and the e4od parts are completely interchangeable with the 4r100 and vice/versa.

The E4OD was behind the 5.4 in F-150s (1997-1998ish)... Dunno why you'd want to put the same tranny behind a 7.3 without beefing it up some.

I know they take the same internal parts. I smoked my tranny @ 183k, has 278k on it now. I ordered a rebuild kit from Dial-a Clutch and the kit was for an E4Od or a 4R100. There where different variations of each one as to how to put it together, but it was still the same rebuild kit. I think it was said previously, but the OBS had E4OD's in them.
