Trany questions

Ok so this truck is a mess of other truck parts thrown together, I'll start with the truck that we are working on then touch on the parts we used to make it go.

First off the problem; you have to high rev it in first to get it to let go then it will sometimes grab second but most time it just grabs third then goes into overdrive and the converter locks.
The original problem was it would shift fine 1st 2nd 3rd but the converter wouldnt lock. All we did was add a ground wire from the trans case to the frame and now this problem.
this seems to me that it has to be an electrical problem but of what nature I dont know.
Any ideas?

The trans in a new rebuild we had in another truck that toasted the engine.

truck is a 90,
tran is out of a 91
Engine is a (original) 90 with a Ford (pre stroke) turbo set up on it. Turbo set up required a harness swap but had all the same connections on it just routed differantly.

The 90 trans held up for a long time but the converter started to fail so we stoped driving it till reciently when we pulled the trans ou tof the 91 and swaped it in.

thanks
