F-150 Gas'r Question.. Headgasket

Hey guys, Its not a diesel but I have a bit of an issue with a relatives 05 F150 5.4 triton v8. He was driving it down the road and it just shut off on him. Towed it home, When we tried to start it it seemed like 6cyliners were firing.. it had a miss to it and wouldnt start at all. So we looked and found the headgasket was blown. These things have alot of electronics.. would it have shut off electricly? Or do you think theres internal damage. We were told it was going to cost around $900 dollars to have a gasket installed. But It seems pretty high to me. I am thinking about doing a compression test on all 8 cylinders, if they test fine just slap a new head gasket on and see how it runs. Is that a good idea or bad? Anyone had this happen to them or know anything about the 5.4's? Any help in appriciated! Thank you!

what ever you do change the spark plugs while you have the heads off and put the best plugs in it possible they are not fun when they break off which most do in the 5.4 triton also check the camshafts and lifters while in ther I worked on one that the lifter went bad at 60,000 miles so good luck

Thanks for the info. Theres a tapping noise when the truck ran fine before the headgasket blow, do you think that could be the lifters? I thought maybe valves but we were told that the valves in that truck are self adjusting, and it made that tapping noise since he bought it at 20,000 miles. It now has 81,000

ok, the head gaskets are not known for failures, also the spark plugs like mentioned before "can" break if you dont know the procedure to remove them. even if they do break its not a big deal to remove them with the proper tools. now that you mentioned noise i would have to assume its probably the cam phasers mainly the pass side. for it to shut off i would say its not a gasket or phaser problem. the pass side cam phaser is notorius for a knock/tap type noise and is fixed by replacing the phaser.

i have seen coils cause misfires and even a shut down concern. you will need to identify which cylinder(s) are misfiring if its a coil concern. and i would look into a coil concern first and correct that first.

94 F250 IDI turbo, auto 2wd.. ATS housing, 3" down, 4" exh, guages. 104k miles got totalled by a damn mustang (parts now).

98 12v, 4x4 quad cab. auto with BD T/C & V/B, Banks Big head, Exh brake, AFC modded, 16.5ish*, KDP gone, 60lb springs, 4K-GSK, BHAF, pyro, trans, and boost guages. 4" straight pipe,

72 AM General M35A2, LDT465-1C "Whistler" Turbo, PTO winch.

I'd look into a leaky injector. The 05s are known for it. Ford even provided a longer warranty to cover em.
