5.4L F150 missing, please help

Yesterday my dad was driving down a muddy road in the rain, shortly after that the engine started missing and his check engine ligth came on and would flash sparadicaly. He took it into an autozone and their scanner told him that it had a bad #6 coil or plug. He went to change both and found that the engine was very muddy so he completely sprayed out the plug housing with air before removing it. Once replaced the engine ran fine for a minute and then started doing the same thing, then there was also a ticking sound from the engine that sounded like a bad lifter would. He then pulled the plug again thinking maybe there was debris in the cylinder, inserted a rubber hose into the plug threads and cranked it but no debris came out, just fuel.

The noise was not present until the plug was changed.
Check engine light was solid but is now sparatic.

I use to have a V10 Excursion that was doing the same. The ticking in mine was gthe spark going into the block. Before I could fix it the engine spit the plug and ignitor off the block. Cracked the ingitor in half. Replaced the ignitor and plug and drove just fine.

a flashing light means a misfire is occuring, and after awhile the light will become solid. either light condition will set a code. what i would do first is re-check the codes, and see what cylinder it is. its possible that water might be in the other plug holes.

be carefull removing spark plugs in these as they are prone to break. i also assume he used a 9/16" plug socket. i have seen people break plugs during installation. also nickle type anti-seize should be used on the metal jacket part of the ground electrode.

one more thing, the 3v's have known problems with the variable cam timing phasers which will sound like a lifter and its usually bank-1 rh side.

Yep i work at a small ford dealer and do atleast 4 phaser jobs a month. Unplug the connector on top of the valve cover on the suspected side that is knocking while running. If noise goes away when the plug is disconnected i would suggest replacing phaser. I have also seen problems with selnoid body gaskets that control oil flow to the phaser. Just a heads up. How much fuel is coming out also? Mabey a stuck injector.

Well my dad ended up taking it to Ford and found out that the injector stuck open, and filled the cylinder with gas, then the rod bent.

They said they will cover it and replace with a shortblock, will this be an OEM block, or a reman?
