Truck stability

Over the past 6 months or so, I've been pulling out my hair trying to figure out what tire/wheel combo I should use in order to create the most stable towing platform as possible for my bumper pull travel trailer. I'm not interested in mileage. On road stability is my A1 goal and priority. Currently, I've got 285 75/16 BFGs on the stock 16X7 wheels...not the best combo. I've been torn between going with a more narrow tire to fit the existing wheel or ditching the wheels and going to a 16X8 wheel which is better suited to the 285s.

Then I started thinking about why all the newer trucks have ditched the 16X7 wheel in favor of something that has a wider diameter. I think it's time to begin the head scratching once again. Would I get a few chuckles if I asked for a concensus on what tire/wheel combo makes for the better towing platform? I believe the Ex has a higher center of gravity than the F Series, so a wider footprint may provide for more stability.

Orr, you could just consider that towing anything with an excursion is a white knuckle event. if there is much of a head wind, they are all over the road. my parents have an 02 ex, and tow a 30 ft, 10k lb trailer, and they have had to slow down to 40 mph hour before just to keep it in control in a windy area. even though it is built on a 250 frame, it doesn't have the same springs as a 250, it has some that are softer, yielding a crappy tow.

CFRO is correct. There have been alot of complaints about towing with the Excursion from several members on here. Seems to be the suspension is too soft from what I hear. Some have improved the stability by putting stiffer leaf springs front and rear and beefier sway bars with good shocks. To answer your original question, a 16x8 wheel is not that much wider and will likely make little or no difference with your 285's. A lower profile wheel/tire combo may help some, but then you have the added cost of replacement tires. Some of the new tire sizes in 18-21 in are double the cost of a 16-17 in tire. I would probably concentrate on suspension upgrades first, as it would be money well spent for towing stability. I run 315/75-16 tires on a 16x10in wheel towing 4horse trailer or hauling hay with no stability problems, but I am also running DR racing Deaver springs in the rear, its stiff and rides rough unloaded, but is very stable. I've already completed all of the suspension mods to my Ex. The truck tows pretty darn well at this point. I want to remove any and all variables that could cause an issue. The 285 tire is not recommended for a 7" wheel, so I'd like to work towards the best wheel/tire towing combo I can afford.

Sorry, didn't know you had already upgraded the suspension(maybe if I would have read your signature before making my comments). Your 285 tires are rated for a 7-9in wide wheel. I would go as wide as a rim you can find if you want to keep that tire size, but you may not notice much difference. You may have no choice but to go to a low profile tire, maybe something like a 325/60-18=(33.4in tall tire) on a 9.5in wide wheel would make a noticeable difference. Harry

I tow my 7k lb TT with 285/75 R16's with no problems. I understand the Ex poses other problems. Are you using a weight distribution hitch?

My TT is a 29' Skyline Nomad. I towed it back from Maine (13 hours) at 70+ MPH in all kinds of traffic and weather with no issues with my wheel & tire combo.
