Opinions on a V-10

I am getting tired of this little car I have been driving everyday and decided I needed another truck. I am thinking about buying a gasser because I don't live but a couple miles from work and other than that I still don't put a lot of miles on a vehicle.
I also need something capable of hauling my puller around in case my buddy that usually hauls me with his 02 7.3 cant make it.

I have been seeing quite a few v-10s that look to be real nice in my price range, but I have never been around one. how much worse fuel mileage wise are they than a v-8, also how are they for power and reliability?
if you have any other opinions let me know.
Thanks

Ross

I drove a CC/LWB with a V-10 for work a while back and it had plenty of power for the trailers we pulled with it (~4K lbs.). Mileage empty wasn't too bad (don't remember the exact mpg though...) but mileage when loaded could only be charitably described as "wretched"

my dad had an 2x4 ex with the v8 and my uncle had a 4x4 F350 with a v10 they actualy got within 1 or 2 mpg diferance and the F350 was geting better both had 3.73 gears the problem with the v8 is that it is under powerd for that size of vehical. my dads ex got traded with almost 300 K on it and did pull alright but the V10 wold out pull it any day they are both good engins. Good luck with what ever you get

That jives exactly with my experience--the V-10 had more than enough power to comfortably haul/pull whatever we needed to move but it was one thirsty SOB...

I get anywhere from 8 to 11 mpg unloaded and I don't even think about when it is loaded. Power on the 3 valve motors is improved as is fuel efficiency. The 2 valve heads make about 190 RWHP and the 3 valves make around 275 I think. I'm not sure on the three valve heads really. An aftermarket y pipe and tuning will gain 1-2 mpg and put you around 230 hp on the two valvers. The really cool thing about these motors is the torque they make is unreal for a gasser motor. It pulls not quite as well as a diesel, but derned close.

I had a 2000 Excursion with the V10, I was lucky to get 12mpg out of it. I had 86k miles on it and blew a plug out of the 10th cylinder. Don't know what happened but I heard a loud knock and I though I threw a rod. Opened the hood and my ignitor was sitting on top of my engine. Went to NAPA and bought a new one and a new plug. It must have stretched the threads out. Had to put an old plug in that cylinder. Ran good for aboout 4 months then I sold it. About a month later blew another plug out and needed a new head. I drove it for 2 years with no problems, but after buying my 05' powerstroke I wouldn't go back to it.

the v-10 is basically a 5.4 v8 with 2 cylinders added. the reliability also follows the 8's the fuel mileage is not that bad considering a 5.4 is a turd when pulling loads a v10 has no sweat doing. i have seen 5.4's get 8-10 and working there butts off when a v10 will get 8 and cruise all day long (same load). the plug spitting thing is rare and has been seen on all the family engines. there is and insert style (cheap fix) that can be done without removing the head BTW

My motto: Be nice, be polite, but have have a plan to kill everyone that you meet.

I have a friend that has had a v10 since 2000. Its a great motor and he has around 120000 miles on it. No problems. million times more realiable than 6l

This will be the onlytime I ever say this. He installed a banks header and ehaust that came with a new ypipe. The old ypipe is tiny and smashed from the factory. It think he got 2-3 mile improve ment with their kit....well worth it

I disagree about the V10, but you know there is always a lemon out there, and I guess I bought it. But the way my 6L runs now I would drag my old V10 around any day.
