Anyone "recover" their own roof headliner?

My headliner isn't sagging, but its dirty, stained, etc (light gray color) and needs replacement. Most of the headliner kits say to first scrape the old headiner material off the backing board, but that seems virtually impossible, due to it being so flimsy. Anyone done theirs with good results? Tips, tricks, thanks.
