Excursion MPG

I have never owned a diesel, but am getting the bug. I have had a couple of Suburbans and really liked them. I am wondering what Excursion owners think of their rigs.

I have been readind a few of the diesel magazines and there seems to be quite a few add ons or upgrades that claim to increase hp and efficiency. Just curious what would be a reasonable MPG for a diesel Excursion with some aftermarket upgrades.

Thanks!

Garage
I have a 2000 V10 and it gets 10 city 14 highway. I wish it was a 7.3, I know a couple guys getting 16-18 city and 21-23 highway. The guys I know with 6.0 Excursions get low teens city high teens highway. If I can't find a diesel Excursion in the next year or two that if worth the money to upgrade to, I'll do an engine swap on the one I have now, because it's in really good shape.

The Current Truck (Oct-2013 to Present):
1999 (Early) F-350 Lariat, CCLB, SRW, Black/Tan

7.3L Powerstroke, 4R100, 4x4, 3.73, 37x13.50-18s, '05 Axle Swap, 6" Fabtech lift, GTP38 "D66" turbo upgrade, SCT 4-position chip with custom tuning by me, Straight Piped 4" down pipe through 5" dual stacks, N-Fab full length triple steps, Pro-Tech cab guard and tool box, louvered 5th wheel gate, Hella 500 Fog and Driving lamps, much more to come...
The one I'll miss, (Mar-2009 to Jan-2014):
2000 Excursion XLT 4x4

6.8L V-10, 4R100, 4.30, 285/75-18, 271whp / 388wtq
The one I won't, (Jul-2005 to Sep-2012):
2005 F-350 XLT, CCLB, SRW, 4x4 FX4

6.0L PSD, ZF-6S650, 3.73, 35x12.5-18, 4.5" Lift

I owned a 99 Suburban (OBS) before I bought the 02' Excursion 7.3L. The 99 had the 5.7L. big difference. I parked them next to each other the and Excursion is so much more stout and bigger. I also liked the options the Excursion has over my old Suburban. I recently did a road trip in which one tank got me 21mpg. Most of the time it is mixed driving and I get 17-18mpg.

My story.... This year I have gone thru alot of changes... trucks/ suv's... I had a 06 crew cab duramax 4x4 single wheel 6 speed auto... BEST DIESEL truck I have ever had... I have had at least 10 new trucks from all brands since 1997 ... My last new one was this chevy... I have never had a duramax till this one.. But thru my last relation ship and $$$ I was forced to lease a gm truck if I wanted this type because I could not get a 72 month loan... took the 4 year lease with buy out...well after 17 years at the same job I have been layed off for 8 months.. I also cut lawns( 26 large properties..) this was always play money.. well over the last 2 years it became pay the bills money... .... So I tried to buy the truck from gmac.. never could get the correct payoff... I had a cherry 02 cadi escalade.. 60 miles... tried giving that to them to get the truck free and clear in October.. It's had beenpayed off for years... They said no way.. So first of october I returned it to gmac lease company.. they said don't you want to keep it.. yeah.. take my cadi outright... I went home sad.... I would have to pay like $2500 out of pocket for returning early... But it was cheaper to do it this way... early return would save me around $1500... Well I took very great care of that truck..was 10,000 under on mileage... So I got a letter saying I owed nothing...My payoff to buy outright was $18,500 ... truck sold at auction for $27,988 .......... I was happy... few weeks latter we were going to waynoka, ok, for dune's trip... pulled a 16ft trailer with the caddi loaded full of atv's and a utv.... 6.0 had the power to pull... but it was just to small....... So here i am... what to do... I sold the caddi.. for $14,000 ... I thought I would try and kill 2 bird with 1 stone and get a excursion with a diesel... stilll pull great.... and haul the family... Well for $14,000... all I could find was 150,000+ miles for a 4x4 with a 7.3 or it was $17,000+ for a pos 6.0 ..... So I said ^%$# and bought a 2001 v-10 limited 4x4 with 50,000 miles for $12,500 .... it's cherry ... was owend by a mary kay lady... always inside..... great.... so far I have found out... when it was new... they did not like the way it sat while pulling.. it was returned and F350 4x4 springs were put on it... it sets up high, but it rides nice when pulling... does even squat when I have the 22 ft equip trailer on it with the s-250 bobcat... What it do for mileage... well driving down the road.... and according to the bs computer... anywhere from 12 to 17 .... flat road at 70 with the cruise on no wind... it will do 15 or 16 .... has a k&n and thats it ... pulling the s-250.... 10 or 11... thats it.... power wise... I happy with it... not what my 6.6 duramax was... BUT it was a hell of a lot better on the low end tq than my old 7.3 and 6.0 crew cab single wheels 4x4's I have had... I am happy... I gace up fuel mileage for lower miles and a cheaper price... If you are not driving and pulling long distance's , just local intown stuff... I would get a v-10 ....so what if it cost you a little extra here and there ........ SORRY it took so long about my story... thanks alex

We've got an '04 Ex Limited with the 6L motor.

We have been very happy with it. I have two daughters who play hockey...so the extra room is nice to have when hauling gear and suitcases.

The only mods so far are the EGR delete and a very mild DP-Tuner Econo tune. This summer...or when warmer weather shows up (whichever comes first) plan on doing the bb mod to bump up fuel pressure...and at a minimum get a cat-delete pipe.

On winter fuel...running down the interstate I can get 16 to 17 mpg running about 75 mph. In town...with all the idling and such...generally see around 12 to 13 mpg. We haven't had it for a full summer to see how it will do with summer #2 diesel.

2004 Excursion Limited 6.0L, Dipricol gauges on the A-Pillar, Bilsteins and BFG's on the corners, lost EGR (not looking hard for it either), ARP studs, RCD Black Onyx head gaskets, MBRP 4" exhaust, (labor performed by Dan @ Midwest Transmission) **giggled when traded**
