I am assuming we are talkin solid 50s and 60s

the different is in the size of the ring and pinion, 50 is smaller, , the bearings are alos smaller on the pinion, carrier bearings I think are the same, also the axle shafts are necked down on the 50 as the 50 has smaller spider gears.
from the ball joints out they are the same

In over all summary, your gonna get beter fuel milage and better drivin with the 50's and the 60's are met more for towing since your gonna have more torque to the ground then the 50's

97' Cummins 2500 Gauges from glowshift (EGT, boost) Fuel pressure gauge from auto-meter. Stage 2 airbox, boost elbow, barrels & plungers turned.Custom fuel plate,Airdog 150gph.AFC mods & 3K GSK.SDX injectors (stage 3 140hp).Drilled wastegate.Converted to a NV4500 with a double disc. Being restored from the ground up

01' Cummins 2500 (dads) with a Hotrod pump,100hp injectors, Fass 150, Edge juice with attitude,also plug and power chip,stage 2 ice box,4 1/2 exgaust pipe,HX40

Best overall is the dana 50 just because your gonna have more fuel milage then the dana 60 but if your gonna tow or haul, the dana 60 would be a better setup just because your gonna have more torque to the rear axle then the dana 50

Very little differnce if we're talking 99-04 D50 vs D60 as near as I can tell. Hubs on D60 seem a bit heavier and it's a slightly bigger diff IIRC.
Pre-97 D50 = junk.
