Thumbs up rear hatch struts on excursions

heres a little trick i just learned.ford put two different length struts on the rear hatch of excursions dependent on whether its 2wd or 4wd.mines a 4wd and they put shorter struts on i guess to make it easier to reach on the slightly taller 4wd?i dunno i just know its annoying that it doesnt open far enough,i needed new ones anyways so i ordered a set of 2wd lift struts that are an inch longer extended.im guessing that the location on the hatch will equate this to a couple inches higher opening hopefully.25 bucks for the pair on ebay,38 each from ford.

Yeah, I found this out when I bought mine. I whacked my head on the hatch (I'm 6'2" barefoot and 6'4" with my boots on) and since it needed the struts replaced I called my guy at Ford to order a set. He tells me about the difference, and that the 2wd set raise the hatch more to offset the 2wd being lower and make it easier to put stuff in the back or some bs like that. So I bought the 2wd ones, put them on and my head is since without dings. Here's the best part, my wife is 5'0" tall and she has no problem reaching the hatch even with the longer struts!

The Current Truck (Oct-2013 to Present):

The one I'll miss, (Mar-2009 to Jan-2014):
2000 Excursion XLT 4x4

so I take it the 2wd struts fit the 4wd Ex's just fine?

This is awesome news. I need to replace the struts on mine and also wouldn't mind having the gate lift a bit farther.

That is correct, they interchange. There are no differences in the hatch or the body, just the extended length of the gas struts. You will probably noice the first couple of times you lift it that it goes up slower the last couple inches because it hasn't gone that high before and the hinges get dirty, but after a few openings, you'll never know it was ever different.

swapped out both my 03's and 05's for the longer ones.... just remember to have a STRONG board to support it when u swap them...
that liftgate is HEAVY

4x4 had the shorter ones because they sit higher and 'someone' thought it would protect the liftgate and fit in more garages if it didn't go higher
