When is a good time(what mileage) to do the first change/flush?

I'm the first owner and am already at almost 26k miles

Truck is still all stock. It's been thru I believe at least 15 or 16 oil changes since new, don't know for sure unless I go look them up in the truck manual. I mostly used 15w40 Rotella but had a couple Motorcraft changes in the beginning.

I really should look into the bypass coolant filter as it seems to be an easy upgrade to do and extra protection is definately a plus.

Am I risking failure by not having the flush done already since it's been 6 years in there?

Would the easier way to do the flush be good enough: Draining, filling with clean water from filtered hose, running truck and draining several times until water drains clear then use distilled water several times as the final flush. Then add 3.5 gallons of ELC top it off with distilled water. ??????????

Or do I already have to add the flush additive?

I have no problems with truck but want to continue on that path.

Little bit confused on the miles you state, but mileage aside, 6 years is a LONG time. Mine was changed at about 3 years due to an EGR cooler failure. But yes, it should be changed.

The Current Truck (Oct-2013 to Present):
1999 (Early) F-350 Lariat, CCLB, SRW, Black/Tan

7.3L Powerstroke, 4R100, 4x4, 3.73, 37x13.50-18s, '05 Axle Swap, 6" Fabtech lift, GTP38 "D66" turbo upgrade, SCT 4-position chip with custom tuning by me, Straight Piped 4" down pipe through 5" dual stacks, N-Fab full length triple steps, Pro-Tech cab guard and tool box, louvered 5th wheel gate, Hella 500 Fog and Driving lamps, much more to come...
The one I'll miss, (Mar-2009 to Jan-2014):
2000 Excursion XLT 4x4

6.8L V-10, 4R100, 4.30, 285/75-18, 271whp / 388wtq
The one I won't, (Jul-2005 to Sep-2012):

It's at 26k miles(26,000) I always stick a 'k' when I'm talking 'thousand', force of habit I guess.

I rarely drive this truck, it just sits pretty in my driveway for birds to poop on once in a while, I hate washing bird poop.

I'm in the process of adding the coolant filter and will be draining coolant. I plan on adding ELC as it seems I'm reading more about people changing it over then keeping it gold.

I just hope that although 6 years old coolant did not build up that crude in the 26k miles. It probably only has about 1,000 miles towing less than 9,000lbs.

I would be more worried about fuel degrading with that low of miles, wow!

It always crosses my mind when I don't go through a tankful in a month but I try to add fuel treatment every other tankful. I also try to change the oil at least twice a year. The trans oil is now on my mind to change as well, I have only changed the external filter once at about 15k miles and now when I get closer to 30k I would like to change oil/filter. Then to the gear oils that I'll probably do next spring.

I also try to change the oil at least twice a year.(wow that is allot.... what climate are you in? If you are in a cold climate and or in a wet climate and your temps hardly reach above 190*F, I would then agree with changing your oil that often Otherwise I would stick with 5,000mile-7,000mile oil change intervals. What is my reason? money.) This is how I change my trans fluid every 25-30thousand.

I use mostly power service additive, not the best but is what I can find locally(I keep both summer and winter bottles handy at home). I have used Howes in the past but not available in my area anymore.

I change the oil more times but I have the fumoto valve which I can fill clean empty 1 gallon oil bottles and then I reuse that oil for a few thousand miles more on my 12 liter 6 cyl. inlines in my sig. I've changed oil on this pickup that looked like I just put it in, and in reality it probably was only in there for about 1k miles.

Thanks for that link

In my area they are the same price so when I run out I either wait for a sale or buy them full price$14-$17. Walmart has them cheapest at the full price prices.)

I also prefer the bolt with a magnet to see if there is any uncommon ware.)

What triggered my question was 15 or 16 oil changes in 26,000 miles? Really? That's an oil change every 1600-1700 miles or so. That's every 3-4 months if it was needed or not. Just seemed excessive, 16 oil changes equates to 80k-120k depending on the change interval 5,000-7,500 miles for most trucks.

Aside from coolant discussed here and transmission service mentioned, have you been diligent with fuel filters though? Maintenance is more than just oil changes on these trucks...

Fuel filter I changed at about 17k miles, and yes I was a little late doing it but will be doing it again soon before 30k.

I had my first oil change with about 1,400 miles and second was I believe at 3k miles. I did once go 4,500 miles which I then changed the oil left filter in and changed oil again 1k miles later with new filter.

If I change the oil on or before 3k miles I do just run the filter for another run with new oil, I haven't done it all the changes but did it a few times.

Airaid filter was put in at about 20k miles and I need to pull it to check if it needs cleaning.

I wish I could grease ball joints, U's and driveshaft but they don't have grease fittings and they would last too long if I kept greasing them.
