Im gonna do it...the 6.0 has got to go

Hi all im a new member to the site the names chris, i have an 05 F250 with the 6.0 backed by the auto tranny. The truck has an intake, edge chip and is straight piped. The truck has gone through three egr coolers and when it came time for the fourth one it got deleted cause it was up on warranty. It has gone though an injector, oil cooler(2), the engine is starting to show signs of more injectors going bad and now the other day third gear was slipping like crazy and the tranny went into limp mode on me (i did disconnect the batteries to do some welding on the bed which makes me think the tranny was just resetting and relearning cause the next time i drove it it shifted alright)...but with the way it was slipping makes me think that its about to go out. So my plan is to do what i wanted to do with the truck since i got it.....12 Valve :-) and i want to back it with a zf6 cause i hate the auto. The truck is a hard worker and weekend hotrod so i need a combination that can hold up to the stress of my driving . With that all being said i am starting the search for everything i need to do the job so i know ill be on here asking all sorts of questions My first one is about how much does a conversion usually coast roughly? im figurin 6ish

Thanks, Chris

Hello Chris. Going with a 12v is a very good option. there are a few guys on here that have done it. I am in the process of doing it right now. My 6.0 lasted till 213000 before it went to the light. I would say the average conversion is around 6-15k depending on what you are going to do. It can be done for cheap if you take your time and get lucky. Right now I am in mine for a grand total of $700.00 (just bought some paint and gaskets) I have the motor a 47re and the adaptor plate. I just need motor mounts, an adaptor for my tcase, tach kit and a few misc, items. I am hopping to keep my net cost under 1000 I still need to part out my 6.0 and sell the 5R110. It will be interesting.

hey thanks for the input, 1000 would be a great price...im starting my search for all the parts now, would i be able to use a 5.9 out of equipment or marine applications or anything else they have been used in other then dodges? idk how much they vary but i think it would open my options of finding one. As for the adaptor plate and motor mounts im gonna build those at work. I work at a manufacturing shop so access to the machines to do it is no problem. the motor mounts are easy but the adaptor plate could get tricky...any input on that?

I think most guys on here that have done a conversion just buy their adapter plates. FordCummins or Destroked. I personally favor Destroked. Get ahold of Steele at GOS Performance. Him and Aden are good dudes

they do make a very good product looks like but $756 seems like a lot to spend when i can make one for just the price of steel plate. Having access to a water jet also helps in the decision to lol

I got my 5.9 out of a Freightliner FL60. They put that motor in a bunch of things other than the dodge trucks, You will want to make sure the pump will alow the motor to be used for a truck some industrial motors might be governed differently. Plus you might have issues with oil pan if it is a front sump as well as accessory locations and the fan. just giving you some things I found during my swap. It would have been a lot better if I found a truck motor but I couldn't pass on this deal.

I'm not an expert but 1200 sounds fair for that motor the 12v with P-pump (1994-1998 early) are getting hard to find and are sought after. That is what they are selling cores for on Ebay. Let us know what accessories it has. Hope it works out.

Got my engine!!! 12V for $1200 and the junkyard didnt strip anything off it so its complete. gonna open it up over the weekend and have a look inside to see how good of shape its in. Dose anyone have a link for a service manual or know where to get one, I see i can spend 129 bucks on one but id rather not. Im planing on putting a rebuild kit into it so i know its 100% sound before it goes into the truck and i also want to tune it up a bit, Im new to cummins so what all should i do to get it to hotrod status but still be able to afford the conversion. Now all i gotta do is find the ZF6 and ill be well on my way

You might want to re-think getting a good service manual (Factory manual). You are about to embark in a lengthy journey to get this motor rebuilt and installed into your truck. Are you sure you want to skimp here?
