How noisey is your tranfercase??

I have a 2500HD, this past weekend was the first time I have used 4wd at any speed (roads were snow covered for more than 250 miles), used it for passing in deep snow at speeds ranging from 25mph to 55mph. Don't criticize my driving...I grew up driving in the snow belt, I likely have more miles driving real snow than most have behind the wheel on dry pavement.

I am not new to 4wds, been into the HD trucks since the 80s, and this transfercase should be very similar to the one that was in my 2004 Dodge 2500 (big chain-drive unit). I know they make noise in 4wd, the typical whine that all of them make. Mine makes a grumbling, almost sounds like a bad bearing in the output...with a rhythmic click, which sounds like a shaft joint. I'm pretty sure its coming from the transfercase, but I'm wondering if its coming from the front differential? It happens under power and under coast, but its absolutely quiet under a "float" condition. Its noisy until the front differential disengages (the center disconnect). I would suspect a bearing to make noise under all conditions...I find it very strange how it completely goes away when not under load or coasting. Oh, and you can hear it while driving with the windows down...

This is the manual shift transfercase, not the electronic one. Fluid is fine, its been change with Dexron VI and I checked it right after I noticed it making the noise (clear, nothing entrained that would indicate a failing part). The front diff was fine the last I checked it (less than 1000 miles ago). Truck only has 10k on it right now...

Is this a normal condition, or should I have the dealer investigate?
