I think it meets a specific HTHS viscosity requirement...You will find that HTHS can varfy significantly between the same grade oils.

IIRC, Schaeffer's 9000 5w-40 meets the spec. I buy mine from specializedlubricants.net. You will get free shipping for $300 worth of order and yes, you can get it in cases of 6 gal jugs. If you order from him, tell him The hammer sent ya.

Hammer

AMSOIL sells the 5W40 European Engine Oil that meets 505.01 spec.
Cost for a case of 12qts is $59.40. Shipping is around $9.00 for a case. If your close to a warehouse you can pick it up there. I just need to know where you live to see whether your close to one.
Next size up is a 30gal barrel at $528.00

9$ per case is not that bad. I have to do some conversions, and I will get back to you. I currently buy it by the liter...

505.01 Oil

Our Old PD TDI needed the 505.01 oil and I always bought it locally from the import shop (impex) down the road. I would only use the Castrol or Motul no matter what anyone told me would work.
