Thinking of opening up a performance shop...

I need to know what all it would take to really open a successful performance shop. Like how do I become a dealer for manufacturers like RBP, ATS, South Bend, Grand Rock, etc. Im only 18 ,but I've talked to my dad and he said he could help me out in starting it up. Its like my dream to open a shop up.

Invest in good diagnostic equipment and tools. Nothing worse than an install shop that can't fix problems when they arise. Then find a good WD that can provide you with good support and products (like us PM me if you have any questions.

you mean the ones that have been AROUND FOR YEARS...the same
ones that have CULTIVATED their REPUTATION for customer service,
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & Knowledge !?!?!

If this guy has the education, skills, experience...and the necessary
historical REPUTATION (word of mouth) then he's probably got
a SHOT...in a GOOD economy...of making a go of it....lack even ONE
of the above and he'll be TOAST in 12 months !

Remember one guy cant do it all....get at least ONE good mechanic, and
pay 'em well, hell make the SR. Mechanic a partner...the business DEPENDS
on it !

people that "think" they know it all are so annoying.... theres plenty of diesel shops that havent been around for any more than 2 years that are so busy that cant keep up....and accessories are still selling like crazy as well....have you read anybodys sig and seen their avatars and stuff with tons of mods and lifts, dressup stuff, etc.?

if the guy has knowledge of running a business, will power to work his everlovin arse off, and capital, its possible...but from what ive seen, dont jump in all at once, leave somethin to make some money at while getting started....part time job, lawncare, etc. BUT...once you DO get your name out there and getting business, you need to give all your efforts to what you want the most, you cant halfass something when your an owner! and get good help that will stick with you! we have a business selling admixtures for concrete, so feel free to pm me as well if you have any questions and good luck at your new venture!

i couldnt agree more...your view is a bit tainted <step away from the forum>....the
number of diesels SOLD are down and the number modding 'em is a small percentage
of those sold....the LEVEL of complication has increased and is getting "WORSE"...so
you can expect the number of mods to be further controlled and frowned upon by
WARRANTY authorizing dealers.

work hard, give up your life to the SHOP <for a minimum of 5yrs> and you stand
a better chance of success...anything less is asking for a failure.

The majority of my income comes from basic repairs. We would not be able to stay open with just selling parts. There are wayy too many cut throats out there selling parts wayy under MAP prices. A cheap price is good for a guy until he has a issue and when he contacts the seller either they guy has no clue, selling parts out of his basement or just tells the guy he is SOL. So keep in mind that return customers and excellent service the first time is where it counts. Most of my business comes from word of mouth. You have to be honest with your customers and you cannot be afraid to tell a customer who is out of line exactly how you feel from time to time either.

You know you are doing something right when the Ford dealers call you for parts.

Im not saying we wont have any rep at all... my dad and his work is known in central texas for all types of work.... and the performance shop wont be like on its own itd just be like a subdivision of my dads work....like just a dealer...i guess the whole performance shop was a lil overboard... a Dealer would be better to say... but yea in the long run id like to run my own shop.

My dad is pretty much an all around work guy and hes trained me since i was young to be the same.... we do an assortment of things
Metal Building construction
Machine Latheing
Fence Building
CNC plasma torching
we already have some experiance in building truck accessories ourselves (Grille guards/headache racks/runningboard/rear bumpers/etc)
Welder
BBQ pit manufacturer
Fence Builder
and not to mention we own the local radioshack
i mean ... adding "Diesel Performance Dealer" would be a nice addition because really the only diesel shop around here is over priced. Ex: Smarty on one of your sites... 615$ (iirc) .... Smarty on his site 900$.... so i mean i alsow know plenty of people around our area that would love to be costumers
