working on the LBZ?

I am new to diesels and was wondering how hard is it to work on these engines yourself?

First, Welcome to TDG!

Depending on your experience with other motors, they are relatively easy. Obviously it depends on what your working on, tearing it down to rebuild, or swapping intakes.

I am not really familiar with any engines but I want to learn I have heard that ford is by far the hardest to work on, but dodge and chevy are easy. Are there books out there to help.

I wouldnt say FORD is the hardest... I think the 6.0 is easier towork on hen my5.9 cummins.... the LLY+ d maxes are crammed I had to do a EGR valve and cooler on one... that wasnt fun! (Then again Idont work on them as much as I do a ford) it takes me bout 45-1 hour to pull an EGR on a 6.0

If you have little experience with motors the 6.6L duramax is not really the best one to start with, the 01-04 LB7 will be the easiest and the 04.5-05 LLY will be more complex, 06-07 LBZ will be even more complex and the 07.5-current LMM will be the most complicated, these engines can be really easy for an experienced mechanic to work on, but for a novice they are a technical nightmare! however like RIPMF666 said, there is a lot of pictures and technical information on forums and websites, as well there are many people willing to help you out on here, just give us a chance :

cab...maybe you could define/elaborate on what exactly you mean by "working on these engines"...???

If you mean complete tear downs..then the above 3-4 posts are what it is...and I'm not your guy... however if you are looking to do "maintenance"..then compared to a gasser..these are relatively easy to work on...at least that has been my experience.

No ignition system to worry about...these motors are more about filter and fluid changes than anything else.

Fuel filter
Oil Filter
Tranny Spin on
Air filter

Changing those on a regular basis will do wonders for the longetivity of your motor and transmission. Using sythetics in both the Transmission (Transynd), and Engine (Pick your brand), will have a similar effect.
