GM's have the central axle disconnect which is just an electric motor that runs a screw shaft out and engages the front axle. Is this a push button 4X4 or shift on the floor? Does the transfer case shift into 4X4 and just the front wheels don't engage?

1995 GMC 2500 SUBURBAN, DURAMAX/ALLISON, 3.42 gears, 261 T-case, Trans has a mild build with ALOT of help from MIKE L. which included ALTO's for C1-C4, PI ML converter, DIAMONDEYE 4" exhaust, CORSA muffler, AFE stage 1 dry filter, EFILIVE, KENNEDY single pump, pump rub kit

sorry bud all I know is that its a manual shift level I wont know if the linkage is broke or if there is a problem with this device on the front axles I did'nt know how the gm 's are setup for 4x4. So the gmc 2500 has a similar setup to what a early 90's jeep cherokee except instead of using vacume to ingage the axle shaft lock it's electric is this a correct assumption. thanks for the help this is great

alright I just ordered one of those actuators on ebay I got it for $75 and free shipping. I figure that if I need to fix his truck i'll have it if it turns out I don't need it I guess i'll just try and resell it on ebay. Thanks for the help guys.

Yes unless it is a full time 4X4 unit it has the electric 4X4 actuator. Make sure you get the electric motor type with the 6 pin plug. The earlier 2 wire hook-up was a thermal style and failed often. It is simliar in operation to how the JEEPS worked as well. There will be a 3 wire switch mounted on top of the T-case, and this activates the actuator to engage the front axle. First thing is to check the fuses for 4X4, and then the switch.

ok sounds ood hope the part I bought is the right one. I hope the switch and fuse are good but if the fuse is junk at least it will be a easy fix. thanks for all the help it is great.
now you guys just gotta convince me to buy a chevy for my next truck the more research I do on my 6.0 the more frustrated I get it's like international could'nt do anything right when they built it. I gotta admit it does'nt impress me that even when you buy the manual shift 4 wheel drive gm that your 4x4 still depends in a electric motor to lock axle. oh well it will be couple years before I can trade trucks. thanks again everyone.

FORD used a vacuum arrangement that relied on the hubs having good seals to hold vacuum, and DODGE used a vacuum actuator in the front end. SO they all relied on some sort of actuator lock the front axle in.

unless you get the manual shift with manual locking hubs like what I got on my truck mines just the bare bones xl package. But yes that is true on the fancier packages. I was wondering how the dodge worked. gotta admit from what i've read about he new frame and springs on the new chevy they sound like there gonna a really rugged truck. Plus I really like the look of them.
