Time for glow plug set # 3

Stupid check engine light is back on. Got a dead glow plug in cylinder # 8. Back to the dealership for another set. Looks like 60K is about all thats to be squeezed out of them.

Cali emissions system does seem to go through some glow plugs. Mine had 162K on it when I did the swap, and only 1 was bad.

Not the same one, the same ones. Last time started the same way. #8 cylinder dies, then # 7 will go. Then #'s 1 & 2. Seems to be the 'outer' four take some exta abuse.

Either way, the dealership will (should) replace all 8.

Any thoughts as to why? Right now I'm still under warranty, but eventually these will come out of my pocket, so if there is a 'fix', i'd like to know. Thanks!

EFILIVE and reduce your glow plug times would work. The CALI emissions runs the glow plugs for quite awhile after the engine starts which puts alot of stress and heat to the glow plugs. With EFILIVE you can reduce the glow plug on time and reduce the amount of heat they go through. Or you can get an ECM from a federal emissions truck and swap glow plug controllers and elimintae the EGR at the same time.

That makes sense, the longer they are on, the shorter the life span.

Wouldnt that trip a CEL as I have a catalytic converter and PCV too?

Basically you would be converting it to a federal emissions truck and do away with the cat. The downside is if you have emssions inspections.

That would be a problem. MA does emission inspections.
