New to diesel trucks

So I will soon be purchasing my first Diesel truck, it's a 2001 Duramax 6.6 liter turbo diesel. it has a new programmer not sure on what brand but my brother in law say he paid $1000 for it. the truck has 131k miles and runs great, not sure what all has been done exhaust wise but its loud as ****. I joined the forum hoping to learn more about diesel engines and how to take good care of a Duramax truck. Also, I will be paying $10,000 for the truck and KBB value was $13.6k so I feel i'm getting a good deal. But if you guys could just let me know the typical maintenance for a diesel truck it would be much appreciated!

I heard that you don't want to turn a diesel off if your like going into a store real quick or anything like that, because it needs to equalize or something. Anyone mind explaining that to me?

Hi Tpeek,
You don't want to shut down any turbo diesel engine that's been working under load before letting it idle for at least 2 minutes, this helps reduce the heat in the turbo reducing premature turbo failure, also wise to let the engine warm up when you start from cold, without excessive throttle use, allows the engine components & fluids to get to their proper working temperatures & viscosities, thus reducing premature wear.

but if you haven't been running the truck hard, and it is warmed up you should turn the truck off so you don't burn fuel needlessly.
