04 Duramax Allison doesn't go in reverse

Dad's 04 Dmax did something new today. He put it in reverse and it didn't go. Didn't rev it afraid it would slip in gear and slam back. Put it in drive and move a little then back to reverse and it took that time. Truck is newer to him and just recently started towing his 5th wheel. Any one have this experience or thoughts on it? His previous truck was a '75 Chevy with three speed and no overdrive (400 I think) so he figures an additive is needed because he figures it's a sticky valve. Got him to hold off on that for now.

Check and clean the electrical master connector on the side of the trans. Drop the pan, change filter and oil. Sounds like it's in the beginning stages of solenoid and/or valve body failure. Rostra is the manufacturer of the solenoids and they do sell direct a lot less expensive then the dealership.

The question I seek an answer for is simply; why, or why not?

I had the same problem with my '02. The torque lock-up solenoid will start to fail as it warms up. Trans shop in Salmon Arm B.C. scoped and found it. Dropped pan and removed solenoid and tested. Failed after warming with a heat gun. Hasn't missed a shift since.
