Just bought a 2004 LB7

1st gen duramax has 73,000mis ....was hoping someone could tell me anything to look for i have a 3000mi 3month warranty on it. i still have my '94 6.5L Turbo after putting in 2 injector pumps (even after the 120,000mi extended warranty on it, has 244,000 on it now) still didnt sour me on the diesels though ...I'm hoping to avoid getting screwed by the dealership on this one. So, I'd appreciate any heads up n things to be looking for.

Your injectors have a factory 7yr/200K warrenty on them. Watch for hard starting, fuel in the oil and there are other factors too. If your idle starts to lope when cold you could have a failing FPR (fuel pressure regulator). Make sure you transmission is good, and you will be fine! Maybe you can find someone with a PPE HOT+2 and blow the trans, that way you can have it built right for just the cost of parts. Just kidding, maybe?

Tony was just being sarcastic is all....thats what he did to his truck. (oops)
If you keep the power to +100hp or less the stock trans is just fine.
Front wheel hubs, rear axle seals, transfer case rub-through are all things that CAN happen, not necessarily DO happen.

Best advice? Dont worry about it. Drive your truck and have fun with it.

Yes, Tom is right, I was only joking. But on a serious note, listen to Tom and keep the power below 100HP gains, otherwise you will be like me. Staring at the hard end of a $4000 bill for a built trans.

Learn what you can for the first few months, this is the best advice any of us could give. This site is full of info relating to the tuning, trans, turbo and other things for our trucks. Most of all just drive it and enjoy it a bit before you get started. I did and I am glad I took that route. I drove mine for almost six months before I added anything. Although I did put Amsoil in everything from bumper to bumper.

Sorry, guess you have to get used to my kind of humor . But on the trans, I have a older 2000 series Allison in my tow truck and the original trans lasted to 390K before it gave up. The new one is already over 125K and still shifts nicely still.

Our trucks are durable and strong trucks. Dont let the troubles that you see on here bother you. What you see on sites like this are a concentrated case. You will see 100 problem trucks, but there are thousands upon thousands of good running and trust worthy trucks. I was a little worried about some of the things that I had seen on this site that plagued other owners, but now I just look at those things that I could do to keep the problems from happening.

Hope this helps a little more. BTW, check your power steering hose and be sure it is not rubbing a hole in your intercooler pipe. Some of the hoses come in contact and wear a hole in the intercooler piping. There are only a hand full of cases, but it is known to happen, and I put some old heater hose out of a wrecked truck at my shop around the hose to keep it from hurting anything.

I bought a '04 LB7 back in the winter with 113K on it, and no problems so far. I came from powerstrokes, you should little to no problems from your duramax!
