'04 durmax trouble moving when cold.....

my dad has an '04 durmax. when he leaves it outside in the cold weather, it has trouble shifting into reverse, or drive. only 1st gear seems to work.

but if we leave it in the garage, where it's heated and warm, then it has no problem.

wondering your thoughts...
thanks.

Does he let it idle and warm up for 5 to 10 mins? The trans fluid is is cold which makes it thicker and not flow as well. Needs to warm up a little before trying to drive it.

yes he does let it warm up for probably 10min atleast.

still doesn't have any reverse...
takes like an hour of driving before it kicks in. the fluid level is also good.

fluid is good. changed that in the late fall....
it's just really weird, cuz it just doesn't shift in reverse, it's like it just remains in neutral, then once it's warm, it hits the reverse gear..

Its the brown (or black) switch on the side of the transmission. Shift cable attaches to it.
