Need some help from the D-Max guys.

Ok I have a friend in need. He has a 03 D-max 4Dr SWB 4x4 and wants to get a diff tuner to keep up with me and my buddies trucks. We all have spartanized 6.4s and he wants to be just as fast or faster. I told him EFI live was the only way to go but I know there are diff tuners out there running there own custom tunes useing EFI live so can you guys give me a lead on who has the best one out there. I also know that PPE has some good tunes out there for you guys too. Hes also doing a 5" turbo back and a intake (if you guys can let me know which intake works best with this year D-max), currently he only has a Superchips tuner. He wants to make power but dosnt want engine trouble, I only knew of the dowel pin on the reluctor wheel as being a prob with the D-maxs but wasnt sure as to what HP that starts to become a problem. Any help you guys can offer would be great. He has a nice truck but he is tired of being left behind when we are all out playing around. So we just need to know what works and what to stay away from.

Currently I have an '02 with the PPE downloader and run a 13.6 with the zf-6 manual. As far as the exhaust goes I cut out the cat/muffler thing and welded in a straight pipe. I bought the airaid intake 'cuz it was on sale and so far-so good. My w/g actuator is mechanical and I have it adjusted to give a max boost psi of 34, the factory turbo can't handle much more than that. The stock clutch had an issue, so I went with the southbend DD, my flywheel seemed to be warped and purple. If your friend has an auto I wouldn't go above 100-150 hp without upgrading the tranny.

One day I will probably switch to EFI Live. I really like things I can't break for my DD so I'm playing it safe right now. EFI Live does seem to be THE ticket so if he is comfortable with the tunes others are making I would give it the go-ahead.

I had an aFe Stage 2 and I would say avoid it. I run the Banks Ram-Air.

In order to keep up with you guys, he's going to have to get the trans built first. Anything over that Superchips tuner (+100hp) will eventually limp the stock trans. Thats just how it is....

Second, add a lift pump. Most fuel systems cant keep up at higher RPM with the big tuners. FASS or Airdog or PPE recommended.

Third, S&B makes an excellent intake. Nicely priced, too.

For a tuner for an LB7, find an older PPE Hot+2. Their old 350 tune kicked butt, but the newer version just doesnt seem to have the raw umph that the old one did. Thats just my opinion.

As for EFILive for the LB7, there are only three people Id buy tunes from. IMO, these three guys have the best tunes for the LB7.

1) Nick at Duramaxtuner http://www.duramaxtuner.com/
2) Tony at RidgerunnerDiesel http://www.ridgerunnerdieselperformance.com/
3) Rob at Adrenaline Truck Performance http://www.atptrucks.com/main.sc

I forgot earlier...

A PPE boost valve is also helpful with a stock turbo. It'll allow your friend to run a few more lbs of boost (safely), which will really wake up the tune.

Tierod sleeves and Cognito braces are a must if he plans on drag racing the truck. Id also make a set of spring clamps so you can clamp the front of the spring packs to the overloads, which will help with axle wrap.

So would you guys recomend getting the PPE Hot+2 tuner and the boost valve, S&B CAI w/a lift pump? What would be some cheaper trans upgrades that he could do rather than going for a fully built unit which I'm sure he dosnt want to do. And with those mods I just listed would the stock trans be a problem? Thanks again for ya'lls input.

I just looked one up for his year it has 10 levels and it says it goes upto 425hp increase and 620 trq increase is that correct? It was priced at 750.00 shipped is that a good deal for this tuner?

It's not bad. Make sure the tranny gets done before going too crazy. Otherwise, it sounds good. I can't remember if the LB7 needs the PPE shim or not but look into it.
