Only one of two things can be happening, its leaking or burning it. Are you noticing any excessive amount of water out of the tailpipe? or any wet spots on the ground?

When was the last time you flushed the system, anti-freeze breaks down over time. Gm recommends flushing the system every 5 years.

You should pick up some radiator flush and new Gmc duramax compatible coolant. The ethylene glycol in antifreeze has a sweet odour and will attract animals which try to ingest it - it is highly toxic to them. Please do not simply drain your vehicle's antifreeze onto your work surface at all. You should be sure to collect any antifreeze that you drain and dispose of it properly as you would do with engine oil. For proper disposal method, please contact your municipality for details. In most cases, it is acceptable to dump the waste antifreeze down your toilet, flushing often as most water treatment facilities are more than capable of treating the water. This method does not apply to people who rely on septic tanks. The 04's have a radiator drain petcock on the passenger side rear of the radiator. Park it with the motor downhill, open up the petcock and the filler cap then drain as much as you can from that, then pull the lower radiator hose, that should get at least 75% of the fluid. You'll want to put the hose back on and close the petcock and fill the rad with tap water, then drain again. Follow the directions on the Radiator flush container. Follow the directions for the rad fluid. You may also want to clean the trans cooler, oil cooler, inter-cooler (if you got one) and the rad of debris with a low pressure wash.

my 03 was doing the same thing for about a year the low coolant would come on and no coolant on the ground but when i would walk past the front of the truck i would have a strong coolant smell. till finally it started to leak on the ground at the back of the engine. what it was doing was slowly drip out the gooseneck and running across the top of the engine and evaporating before it hi the ground until the leak got bigger and hit the ground. all it was, was a fifty cent o-ring.
