Ran Across a truck.. is it worth it??

As stated in my Intro thread i have been looking at getting myself into a diesel. I ran across what i THINK might be a deal but i would like to hear from you guys and what you think..

2003 Dmax 3500 dually.
250k. pretty sure mostly city.
Was a company truck and was used to tow thier skid steer
5th wheel slider
No tailgate
Body is in great condition
ex. Cab or crew... not sure, i seen it at night breifly.

its the Girlfriends uncle's truck and he is asking 8k.

now my question is,

What is common with these trucks to go bad or what is the life of these motors/trans? Its an auto and its turbo thats all i know as of right now.

Just wanted to see if i would be getting myself into more of a headache with this truck than not and figured you guys would be the ones to ask!

Thanks in advance!

$8K and 250K miles? Hmm, 2WD? I'd guess that's a lot of highway towing. Get the hours if you can. Can you find out the history? You can request a VIN Check and we can see if they had the injectors replaced a few times. It's 50K beyond the extended warranty on injectors. Please get as much info as you can so we can better guesstimate for you.

LB7s have injector issues, but it doesn't seem to hit all of them. At 250K you will looking at a lot of regular PM to keep it going. The powertrain will run for as long as it's taken care of.

Yea i only had a brief discussion on it but he seemed to be more than willing to tell me everything about it. it was just late and i had to take off.

Ill get some more info from him and see what you guys say. Ill grab the vin and see if i can get a history of it to see bout the injector's or anything else he may have had done..

Ill grab a pic next time i get to his house and post that as well.

Does 8k sound normal? he told me the dealer only was willing to give him 7k? Not sure if thats a bad sing or not...

Towing a skid steer in the city is going to be rough on the trans I would think.

Life changes, so roll with it, not against it.

It's about right, NADA ranges from $7-17K for 4x4 or $5-15K for 2WD LS.

Yea its a 4x4. And another question that i havent asked. What kind of Mileage are these things getting? I know my buddies (Dodge) ranges from 15-18 w a tuner and some trans work and go fast goodies. Are these things absolutley terrible on gas?

And i had someone say something about the suspensions on these. Would the front end be something that i need to pay close attention to as well? Im Mechanically fluent so working on it wont be an issue, i just want to know if big money is going to haev to be dumped into engine/trans ect....

Of course most of this can only be found out if i test drive it and crawl under it. and i realize that. Just looking for any tips and what to look out for IF there are any common things... Like injectors as previously stated.

Mileage will depend on driving habits. 15-18 should not be a problem. My LLY and LMM did/do better than that if I drive conservatively.

Tie Rod ends and center link are the only real issues with the front end.

with that many miles on it i would be checking out the t-case and all 4x4 components, pull the dipsticks and check the oils, if the tranny fluid smells burn you may be in trouble

Good call Aaron. The pump rub issue also affects those trucks. Hard to check but you can fix it. The tranfer case can rub a hole through the case. The easiest way to check is the rear output yoke or look for a lot of ATF under the truck starting at the x-case. If it's leaking, has a visible hole or you can feel a hot spot after it's ran; you may be tearing it down. Most of these don't make it much 100K without this issue showing up.

Here's another one. This is Kennedy. The kit is way cheaper but it's just a plate.
