Dad died-new diesel truck-ran out of gas???

Hey guys! I'm new to the site and new to diesel trucks. About 6 months ago my Dad passed away at 57 years old and my Mom basically gave my wife and I his truck instead of selling it. It's an '03 Chevrolet Silverado Crew-Cab long bed with a 6.6 Turbo Diesel engine.

Short story: I ran out of diesel recently (on the way to get some!), put in some diesel, primed it (someone had told me how to do this), tried starting it a few times, wouldn't start, battery basically was dead, jumped it, primed it again, got it started, drove it the next 3 days with no problems starting it up, on the 4th day it wouldn't start, I primed it again, it started right up, drove it another day or two, on the 3rd day it wouldn't start again, I primed it, started right up again.

My questions: should I take this in to get checked? did I do something wrong? has this ever happened to anyone else?

Thanks for any info anyone may have! Great forum you've got here.

Welcome to the garage Jeff.. Sorry about your dad.
I'm not that knowledgeable on the Duramax's
but if you post your question in this area (Duramax 2001-2004 (LB7)

I'm sure someone will be able to help you and get back to you pretty soon.

Welcome to TDG Jeff.

Very sorry to hear about your dad.

Sounds like you may still have some air in the lines or a leak somewhere. Where did you prime it?

Life changes, so roll with it, not against it.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

I would check the fuel filter first and make sure that it is tight, that sounds like it might be your problem. If not, my guess would be something somewhere is loose on the fuel system and letting a little bit of air in.

Thanks.

That's what I was thinking but I'm not sure how to check/fix it.

I don't understand the question of 'Where did you prime it?'
There was a little screw that I turned and then I pumped to get the air out of the line. At least that's what a friend told me to do. It was under the hood.

i would have to agree with Wayne, sounds like there is a leak in the fuel system somewhere, the filter gasket may not be seated properly, check the filter first
