crazy gauge cluster

A couple of days ago I got in my truck fired it up and the speedometer was pointing at 50mph at a stand still, and the fuel gauge was pointing straight down, tach, oil pres, tranny temp, and volts all worked normal, so I drive it around for a couple of days and the speedo starts to lower in speed at a stand still till it goes to zero yesterday and functions normally all day, also the fuel gauge returned to normal till last night it died on 1/8th tank, and now today the speedo is again pointing at 20 when the truck is at a stand still, and the fuel tank is reading 3/4 to full with like 10 gallons in the tank, checked the fuses and every connector I could get my hands on and it all checked out, any ideas?

other than this little hiccup Im kicking myself for not buying a dmax earlier, this truck is awesome

The problem is the guage cluster itself. Mine did the same thing when I test drove it, and the dealership replaced the entire cluster before I bought it. There is a recall for this, but I believe the warranty ends @ 70K miles/7 years. Where you just bought your truck, I would take it back to the dealership, they should fix it for you.

Well Im screwed, Im at 115 and I bought it from a private party, if it isnt gonna cause problems ill just leave it, the edge has a speedo and ill just keep an eye on the fuel, how much of a pain is it to do it yourself? and how much does a new gauge cluster itself cost?

I believe the dealer has to replace it. The reason I say that is when you replace the cluster they have to set the odometer based on the old cluster. I dont believe that an individual can do it themselves. I would check with Eric in the vendors section, he may sell them and be able to help you better then I can.

They sell them on ebay as re-man's and they come with instructions on how to program them. There is also a shop in portland oregon that will re-build yours. That is who the gm dealers send them too. I will track their number down, but wont be able to do so till friday.

Bad stepper motors are causing your issues. If you can solder, you can fix it yourself.

Look on Ebay for the motors. I highly recommend you replace all 7 of them while you're in there.

Mine has started acting funny as well. Does anyone have the recall info? I asked my dealer about it but they couldn't find anything.
