Hey need some info

hey i need some help im trying to decide whether to fix my powerstroke or get a duramax. i have heard that the allison in the chevys is great when its stock but what about tuned? i was running custom tunes in my ford with no tranny problems but ive looked around on the forums for chevys and would i need to upgrade the tranny? and if so how much would it cost? im pretty addicted to making my truck go fast and will be modding it as money comes in and would like to know what i would have to do if i got a duramax?

Check out the Link in my Signature, the Duramax Index

the Allison can take about 80-100hp over stock before it starts to limp, and you can just put a Converter and valve body in and it will hold a little more, but to get away with big tunes your gonna need a kit like that from Suncoast like the SC3(up to 500hp) sc4(up to 700hp) sc5(above 700hp), but your gona have to spend a minimum of $2000 on converter and VB, $4000up on the kits with install.... if you do the work yourself you could save a little cash that way, but the Allison is an expensive toy

A well tuned dmax can churn 450-500hp on a stock engine, with a Lift pump

We are always here to answer questions, so feel free to ask, you can get a lot of power out of a dmax, easier than your 6.0

well if i did get it i would more than likely be happy with around 500hp, unless of course someone smokes me in town and then id want to do more , sometimes it seems like a trade off either i keep my 6.0 and keep working on engine problems or i get a duramax and have to spend a butload of money on the tranny

ouch thats not so good...

well the nice part about an LB7(01-04) truck is that they can be had for $10k-20k and are still really easy to mod and are cheaper to start with

Either truck at 500HP is going to need a tranny, eventually. If you are wanting that kind of power, IMO the Dmax is the way to go. LBZ truck, lift pump, PPE or EFI, and a tranny and you are in the neighborhood of 500 RWHP. You can't do the same to a 6.0 and get those same numbers. All trucks at that level are going to live for a short period of time relative to their stock counterparts.

ya i will most likely be looking at a 03 or 04, i know they wont last as long but im looking for reliable as possible while still having alot of fun. i will more than likely stick with efi live ive had quite a bit of bad experiences with generic chips and im assuming efi live is the same custom tuning that the sct is for 6.0s? so for lets say that 500 or the 700hp kit what would that run me? and would i be able to install it myself between me and my bestfriend we have a pretty extensive knowledge of how things work

How much work do you plan to do yourself? There are a few places to buy kits and what-not and the parts generally run about the same as what the labor costs. The LB7 and LLY are going to cost more to run at those levels.

I'll second Wayne on the LBZ. The newer 6-Speed trucks can handle more power with less mods. The upgrades that took place when Allison upgraded to the 6-Speed make them much better if you plan to play and they have a second OD.
