Light Duty Diesel

I am writing on this subject to say that all 3 automakers are working on a new diesel for their half ton trucks, I remember reading about it, they should be coming out around 2009. It will be interesting to see.

I thought it would just be intake on the outside, exhaust on the inside.

sounds to me that the intakes are on the outside with the exhaust in the valley.
sounds likea good idea to me!

However, GM seems to be leading the pack. The smaller Ford "baby powerstroke" is kind of a joke at 225HP. No one will buy them in the 150 or Expedition unless they're at least 300Hp. I haven't seen any prototype from Chrysler other than the Liberty diesel, which looks to light for a 1/2 ton p/u or a Durango.

The V6 PSD is derated for commercial use (the only current application for that engine) as are all MD engines. I can easily see the same power (or more) being available for a LD application (if Ford pulls their head out of their *****)

Question,

Which is better, 4.5L in 6 cylinders or 8?

If it were an inline 6 against a V8 I'd go for the I6.

But since they're both V's, it's going to be a toss up.

Theoretically, the 6cylinder would be more efficient due to fewer moving parts (assuming Ford and Navistar don't over-complicate it)

Interesting that GM developed the 4.5L without Isuzu.
Anyone remember the last reliable diesel from GM?:

444, i'd go for the I6 too, i like the bigger bores in a little fewer numbers than small cylinders, plus the advantages of the higher trque and lower rpm range for economy, and you'd also have less clust in the engine bay, but you know, right now, any diesel in the LD section would be greatly appreciated, i can only hope ford or dodge come out with a format a little more to my liking

Exhaust is in the valley, the intake is through the top of the heads (straight down into the cylinder)

There's nothing on the outward side of the heads, it is pretty cool even for a GM:Thumbup:

I am pretty sure they will all be in a "v" configuration. I know that Cummins is working on a V6 and a V8 light duty diesel that has already been put in a 1/2 ton (for testing)

The big three all need a diesel that can get decent fuel economy; full size pickups/SUV's right now is their bread - n - butter. With rising fuel costs they cant have this market killed.

You know you live in a Country run by idiots if....
Hard work and success are rewarded with higher taxes
and government intrusion, while slothful, lazy behavior
is rewarded with EBT cards, WIC checks, Medicaid and
subsidized housing, and free cell phones.
