length of th400 vs 4l80e

im doing a cummins swap in my r3500 cc. i will be using a 4l80e ultimately, but all i have for mock up right now is a th400. i know the bell housing bolts the same, and i know the 4l80e is longer than the th400. i am wondering if the 400 and 80e are the same length from bell housing to the cross member mount. i only want to drill those holes once.
also, is it wise to cut and rebalance/reweld a driveshaft?

I wouldnt drill any holes until you have the 4L80 on hand, and yes you can cut and rebalance a driveshaft as long as it is done by a driveshaft shop.

I did some digging and found that the 4L80 case is longer than the TH400. The mount will be farther back. I'd do as horsehaulin recommends and get the proper trans first before any fab work starts.
