Tough decisions

So in my search for a diesel truck i keep going back and forth from dodge or GM they both seem like great trucks to me and im having a hard time pulling the trigger on one or the other. This will be my first diesel truck and i will mod it up but cant afford to dump 5k+ into it right out of the gate though. Any advice would be great.

p.s. also posting in the dodge forums to see what they say.

well what years of trucks are you looking at? What do you want to do to the truck? Body style preference (Regular cab/extended cab/crew cab, Long box/short box etc...)?

Looking at 03' or newer GM/dodge extended cab/crew cab, shortbox. Will be a daily driver that will be built up to go fast. Wont be doing much towing just some light duty stuff like snow machines/skiffs.

What part of Alaska are in? The IFS on these trucks is IMO very weak and if you're in Western AK or the interior where the roads are rough I'd suggest something with a solid axle.

Also I would suggest going with an 05 or newer if money allows as they don't have the injector problems of the LB7s (01-04)

Gotta watch on the higher mileage 5 speeds for transfer case pump rub as well.

btw I'm from Soldotna can't wait to get out of the military and move back to AK

The IFS isn't that bad, if you upgrade the weak points. I would also recommend '05 and newer Chev/Gm. For the dodge, the '04 and newer trucks. Either truck should be able to make some good power. It all comes down to price and which truck you like better.

2006-2007 LBZ with the 6-speed

The IFS is NOT as bad as everyone makes it out to be, tie-rod sleeves take care of the main issue that most people run into, you can get a few more parts but unless you are off roading hard or plan to put a lift on they are great, stock suspension geometry is key to keeping the IFS in good shape

I had an 05 dodge, I dont think I will go back to dodge, I love my Chevy too much
