Looking at buying a chevy

Hey all. I am looking at buying a 95 chevy 1500 4x4 Z-71, with a v6 and and a 5 speed.
it drove good, all the u-and cv joints are tight, the truck had very little rust, but I have pretty much always been around fords so I was wandering if there is anything special I need to look at on this thing before I decide to buy it.

Thanks
Ross

I've never been impressed with the 4.3 V6. If you're buying it for mileage, be ready to be disappointed.

I have pretty much given up on milage, the truck this will be replaceing was a 93 f150 2wd, reg cab, short bed, with a 300-6cylinder, and a 5 speed. it got 10mpg in town and 14 on the highway.

is it a decent engine other than that?

I am not really the type to buy vehicles for resale value. I useually drive them untile they die, infact this will be my third vehcle (daily driver) in the last 6 months, and the other 2 are still in my driveway.

4.3 is a decent enough engine, just underpowered. Cant say I've had to fix much on the two I've owned/own. It's just that my wife's 01 Blazer has no guts, neither did the 97 Jimmy I owned, or her Dad's 99 Bravada. So in a full-size truck, that lack of power will be magnified. The manual trans may help some.
I would try to find a 96-99 truck with a vortec v-8 in it first. The fuel mileage was better in those engines than in the first series 89-95. Reliability was just as good. As Kip said, the value of the truck is much better, too.

Heck, its up to you anyways. If the price is right, and you think the truck meets your needs and its in good shape, buy it.

I had an 89 Silverado with the 4.3 5speed. It was a good truck, but as mentioned before was underpowered. I got 20-21MPG on the hiway. Just don't try to tow anything. From my experiance, they get better milage than a 300I6, but don't have near the power. My engine let go at 170+ (busted crank, 2 shattered pistons) then again I was pretty hard on it.

If you buy it you will wish that you held out for one with a 350. But if its cheap enough buy it then resale it later.
