Exaust pros&cons

Is there a huge difference between the egt's with a cat back and a turbo back. also I see a new wrapped downpipe available for the dmax, anybody have one?

there was a study in disel world a few months back between the 2, not much difference in egt's and dyno numbers.

1996 Gmc k2500 4x4 6.5 turbo diesel, with mods Blew the head gasket, put all new heads, valves, injecotrs gaskets etc on the truck only to get it together and find out it had no oil pressure, and sounded horrible (pry a spun bearing). SOLD

so for the extra $300 is it worth it to go to the turbo? also any idea on how many additional ponies you can run through a Allison before failure? I've heard anywhere from as low as none to as mich as 150? I'd like to through in a torque conv. and be safe for 450 rwhp.

$300 for a front pipe? IIRC, most of the aftermarket exhausts are from the turbo downpipe flange back....thats what they call "turbo back". I don't think any of them have come up with a new downpipe.

I'd say there'd be a big diff between turbo-back and cat-back, as you're eliminating another restriction in the cat converter.

Summit has a 4" d-pipe, I'm getting one as soon as i get the $$. $400 for a 4" system and $500 for 5", both have the 4" d-pipe (stainless only avail. in 4"). I had planned on using header wrap on the d-pipe, It's only $20 worth a try. Most of the other companies out there that advertise "turbo back" actually mean "turbo downpipe back". If you are wondering call each manufacturer and ask them directly, I have only found two that offer larger downpipes. There might be more but I haven't looked that hard, just the big names.

the d-pipe I saw in the Oct. issue of D.P. is from Diamond Eye Performance and is wrapped already, says it'll reduce egt's by 150.

what exactly does wrapping pipes do anyway? I can see where it would stop the transfer of heat to surrounding parts but there's got to be more to it than that.

Keeps the heat in the pipe, not radiating into the engine bay.

heat = energy.

in diesel world this month, jsut read the article. w/o changing anythign else, the difference between the 2 on their test vehicle a ford , was 200 degrees diff on egt's and 3 ftlbs of torque between the 2 exhaust. Would imagine if you got an apppropriate intake to go w/the exhaust you could see a bit more of a change. ceramic coating si even better then tape but tape is good, keep heat out fo the engine bay, keep the heat in the pipe out of the engine bay.
