LMM, LBZ, LLY, LB7 Where do you find these engine codes at on the trucks? Sorry if it's a stupid question. I gotta go Duramax shopping for another buddy. Any other basic info would be greatly appreciated as well.

Look on the VIN for the 8th digit for engine ID.

1 - LB7 (2001-2004.5)
2 - LLY (2004.5-05)
D - LLY/LBZ [note: The LLY of these years is actually an LBZ with different tuning. So check the build date (IIRC on the drivers door) before you buy. IIRC, the switch was in Jan of 2006.]
6 - LMM

Allison trannys were 5 speeds 2001-2005. 2006-up are 6 speeds with tap shift.

I know this is an old thread, but just wanted to update this.

The 06 LLY still has a 2 in the 8th digit of the vin. Its still the same hard parts as the 06 LBZ with the D in the vin. They both have 6sp allisons as well.
