Encoder motor. Did the message just pop up on startup, or did the 4wd really not engage?

mostly the latter, at first there was a message but it works, then now it wont engage and appears to time out and the message appears. if i keep trying if i shut the truck down and then retry again it might work.

is it a major problem or something easily fixed?

I asked if it happened on startup because on the newer GM trucks, the BCM sends out a "wake up" signal to all the different modules at startup. If it doesnt receive a "Hi, how are ya" back within a set amount of time (even if the module is working correctly), then the BCM passes over that module, and it sets a message on the DIC.

If the 4wd is not engaging, then the encoder could be bad. I'd take the truck back to the dealer for warranty.
