Transfer Case Fluid Confusion

I have been reading about some guys running 5W-30 motor oil in their transfer cases instead of the ATF type fluid. What are the benefits and or down sides of doing this? Any input is appreciated.

Thanks!

-Robert.

The only benefit I can see is that the 5W-30 is thinner and therefore needs less power to spin the transfer case.

The motor oil is thinner then the ATF? I thought it was the other way around.

5w-30 is thicker and disapates heat far better than ATF. You need a lubricant in a transfer case; not a hydraulic transfer medium. I run Amsoil x 5w-30 in mine. There is a bulletin out for this.

You drain it normally and then fill through the VSS port in the top of the case.

I'll PM you the info Robert.

Oh I thought you used a gear lube in the transfer case, that makes more sense.

Are there any downsides to it? Cold weather operation perhaps?
