opinions on 8.1

thinking about buying another truck to use as a daily driver and to tow my pulling truck around if my other tow rig isn't available.

what kind of milage do the 8.1's get incompairason to smaller gasers in the same size truck.
also how are they power and reliability wise.
it you have any other opinions on the subject let me know.

Thanks

Ross

The 8.1 I got has been worked hard for almost 100K miles I'm talking always loaded in excess of its GVWR.

It'll out pull a 454vortec easy as pie !

It dose about 13-18mpg depending on how heavy you load it and how hard you drive it.

Truck is always pulling a tandum enclosed trailer loaded with lawn mowing gear, that weights about 12-15K-lbs hitch to the reciever all summer long in the hot heat.

All winter long in the bitter cold slush n slop its pushing an 8 foot boss V-plow.

Truck is an 02 2500HD 8.1 4spd auto 4.10 gears and 235/85R16E tires.

Hope that helps some?

they also use the 8.1 in trucks as heavy as a 6500 n 7500 so its gotta be tough.

thanks I find that milage pretty hard to believe though. dad has a 2500 with a 6.0 in it and he cant hardly get 15 out of it

I have been looking at v-10 fords and everyone talks like they get 12 or less loaded and unloaded
but fuel milage isn't my main consern....

The harder the engine works the more fuel it burns. . .

your 6.0L tows running 1/2 throttle while my 8.1L towing the same load runs at 1/4 throttle i wounder who burns less fuel. . .

I swapped out a bad tired 4.3L V6 in an S-10 for a 5.0L V8 i gain almost 2.5mpg just driving around. . .

The 8.1 is a good motor, and was available with the Allison trans which is quite a tough combo. Some of the earlier years had oil consumption issues do to ring clearances but other then that no issues. A friend has one in a 3/4 ton Yukon XL and averages 13mpg, and his does have the Allison. He tows a 8K lb camper with it occasionally and it handles that no problem... to the tune of 8mpg.

I had a friend who's father had 3/4 ton stick 8.1. Can't remember the numbers but when he told me about the mpg I said bull to it too, but he swore they hand calculated it out.

Like i said the 8.1 Came in commercial grade Gm truck's which should easily speak for its durability and power . . .

I have ran the 200 2500HD as DD for a few weeks just back n forth to the shop it got 18mpg running in tow/haul mode pulling 3 ATV's 280 miles each way it got 13mpg. . .all hand calculated then re calced by another then another to make sure it was correct. . .

Now towing 8-12k-LBs i am sure it'll drop in the single digits but it is a gas engine under a heavy load that it will slightly fast then a diesel but then yes it is less efficient. . .

Not only you find them in the truck and I did work on industrail verison of the 8.1 gaz engines and they really hold up the abuse pretty good and I know they used to be in Marine useage as well now that do hold up there as far you know with marine usage that is very harsh useage due you will run near full load.

Ditto with industrail verison the early models have some issue with oil but otherwise they just work fine without any suprise.

Merci,Marc

Pas de problème,il marche n'est-ce pas?"(No problem, it works doesn't it?)
