what diesel motor in a late 70s 1 ton?

Im going to look at a late 70s 1 ton Chevy truck. A friend told me it had a 454 with a diesel conversion on it..?? Not sure if he is hitting the pipe or not, but what diesel did GM use in there trucks before the 6.2? I know of the 350 conversions but did they do a BBC diesel conversion? As soon as this water dries up some I will go out a take a look at the truck and take a few pictures. Just curious, if its a tall deck BBC..

Before the 6.2L would have been the 5.7L diesel, but i've never heard of a 454 diesel. Maybe someone else can chime in here.......... But if its a Chevy 454, its a gasoline engine.

Thanks for the info Mike. I searched the link you posted, there are no 454's posted. Its probably a gasoline engine.

The 5.7 Oldsmobile diesel was only offered in a 1/2 ton and had a very low tow rating. I think it was in the '78-'81 trucks.

Yep ! If its a 1970s diesel it'll be one of the above posted engines other wise its a gas engine.

If it was an old conversion, it could be a Detroit diesel, but if it's a later conversion it could be a 12 valve cummins

Yup thats right it was very popular to have the 4-71 Detroit in your 1972-1979 GM truck. . .

The 4-71 detroit was swapped into C20-C30 n K20-K30 trucks 20 years ago like the 12V-CTD is being swapped into F250's-F350's today if not more so. you had 454 V8 power at 250 I6 fuel mileage with swap cost of that of a 350. . .
