Rancher problems?

Okay fall calving season is upon us, and my faithful 01 honda rancher is down. When I turn the key on the neutral light wont come on. Sometimes if I shift through the gears long enough it will come on allowing it to start. The light will also come on in any gear. Im thinking sensor but am not finding much. Any advice is welcome.

Thanks

Is there a neutral switch on these quads? Maybe that went bad on you.

That a toe shift? I had a toe shift Rancher for 2yrs and never had issues with that. Has to be a neutral saftey deal. Now my Foreman 450 is an ES and it sometimes gets stuck between gears and won't start .

Is it an Electric shift or a foot shaker? I have a ES and the selnoid went out on it and had to have it replaced at the dealer. It wouldn't go into any gear, it would set there and make the noise but wouldn't go. And there was a recall on these for that problem, but I failed to get it. I also have to rock the bike back and forth sometimes to get it to shift if I leave it in gear and shut it off. All and all its been a good bike, pulling trailers around the farm, hauling dogs, and just riding the heck out of it. It's been under 12 ft of water on the Wabash River and still keeps a pounding away.

Its a foot shifter. The neutral light would come on in any gear if you rocked it around enough. Now it wont come on at all. The reverse light would sometimes come on in neutral too, so Im thinking somekind of sensor.

Sorry to hijack but this happens to my g/f's uncle's Rancher and he always has to get off the quad, get the special wrench they give you and crank the tranny back to neutral in order to get it running. Doesn't happen much, but I remember it being a pain when it did.

Yep it works till you loose the wrench in a snow bank in the middle of Wyo like I did . You have to replace the shifter motor or it's just full of grass and crap. I just got a Rubicon with an Auto and it's the ticket. Still have two Foremans though.

By squeezing the brake handle it should turn over and fire weather in D or R you don't have to in the N position to start them.

The farmer up the road from me has 2 rancher AT's 1 with 9K miles the other 7K miles, tho he never changes the oil and is always pulling around 3,500LB trailers they keep right on running very durable units. . .

Makes me think my Rubicon may never wear out, well if I'd quit towing around 12K-LB truck with it yup it tows 12K rolling weight 3 guys on machine 1 on each rack 1 on seat and flip it into ESP 1 low range 4WD and rolls along about 3-5mph . . . for the half dozen yards i need to move it. why start a cold truck just roll it ahead n shut it right back off when yea can move it with the ATV

anywho i got off track. . .

I would try squeezing your front brake handle and trying to start it .

KWT800, at the very bottom of the motor, towards the back of it, there is wire with a plug in deal on it, going into the casing. It's got something to do with allowing it to go into reverse on the ES shifters. I've pulled that off couple times by hanging up on brush and such. Had to splice it back together once cause I wedged a limb up under it. Might want to check that out, or yours might not have one. Might try ATVtime.com forum for more info. Hope this helps.

Got a service book for it today. Looks like its a gear position switch, which is internal. Fun Fun
